ADAPTIVE REUSE: NATURE FRAME ARENA

ARCH 302B | ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN III | SPRING 2024

This semester’s objective was to design a community basketball facility located in the City of Pasadena in Los Angeles. The site contains a series of big box retailer but our specific project was an adaptive reuse of the existing Bed, Bath & Beyond store. The building is approximately 40,000 SF with exposed facades on the East, South and West.

DESIGN

I intentionally kept the roof flat to keep the emphasis on my atrium, grand staircase and the courts on the roof concept. The boxy, rectilinear nature of my project also blends easily with the existing context, respecting the existing building.

The outdoor hallway space creates a blur between interior and exterior space, exposing the raw steel structure of the building. The hallway is covered with perforated vertical shading panels.
