COFFEE MACHINE “THE ICON”

ARCH 202B | ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II | SPRING 2023

The aim was to design a prototype for an iconic concession stand for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The concession stand would serve as both a food service venue and a visual marker for event sites across the city. The stand must be approximately 300 to 400 square feet with a maximum height of 20 feet.

In the initial stage, based on the book “Learning from Las Vegas” by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, each student was given two architectural landmarks.

Students then were asked to create their own icons based on the precedents.

Each hybridized figure then got translated into a three-dimensional object. (max. 20’ x 20’ x 20’)

STUDY MODELS

DESIGN

For my concession stand, I decided to make a coffee place as the “duck” representing a coffee machine.

ELEVATIONS

In terms of material, I used metal plates on the exterior for creating resemblance to a coffee machine. In the interest of generating a contrasting experience, I used wood on the interior, which is a reminder of an actual coffee shop or a coffee cup.
